At Friends of Sauk Creek , our mission is to stop environmental damage from city actions in a nearby greenway woods. We aim to save the tree canopy in West Madison so the 5,600 Sauk Creek trees can continue to clean our air from carbon emissions and increasing forest fire debris. We will work to fight climate change with teachers, advocates, area children, our alder and volunteers as we build nature-learning activities in this Madison, Wi. environmental gem.
Since 2000, neighbors in Madison's Westside neighborhoods have led an environmental effort against building unneeded bike paths that require removal of many of the 5,600 trees in the Sauk Creek Woods. The city council recently approved plans for one questionable bike path in what is called the West Area Plan. Think globally, work locally against climate change. We need your help now!
We offer a wide range of volunteer programs, including researching environmental conservation, writing and sharing flyers, distributing lawn signs, writing emails and ciirculating petitions, speaking at public meetings, working with the media, updating our website and planning gatherings. In September 2024 just before the city council voted on the bike path, a team of FOSC volunteers gathered hundreds of documents for a book to ensure that our work of the past two years would be forever recorded as the city moves to the design phase of the greenway.
The desired tree canopy for Madison is 40 percent of land area. It is now only 21 percent. In the Sauk Creek Area, it is 16 percent. Removing many of the Sauk Creek trees will weaken the entire city's ability to absorb harmful carbons and will limit cooling that can slow climate change
